At first glance, James seems to be repeating something most of us - TopicsExpress

At first glance, James seems to be repeating something most of us know: “Don’t judge others by their material wealth; don’t show favoritism.” Reading it, I wondered why James would feel the need to reinforce this to his readers. I don’t think many of us would turn away a poor person at our door or only talk to the rich people in church, right? But these tend to be the obvious examples we think of and then pat ourselves on the back for knowing we certainly wouldn’t do. When I truly think of ways I show favoritism and judge others, it dawns on me how in the eyes of God my sins are as glaringly obvious as those of one who gives the rich man the best seat while the poor man stands. There’s a reason Jesus commands us often to care for the poor, the sick, the weak. It’s because it’s not easy, and it’s not always what looks good. While wealthy people are often able to cover up a multitude of sins with their money, the poor are exposed. It’s uncomfortable. But isn’t that the state of us all? “For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.” (Revelation 3:17 ESV) However, there is often a rich faith found in someone who isn’t busy trying to make their lifestyle impressive on the outside. Someone who thinks more about their soul than where to build another home. As Christians, we should be drawn to those who want to spend time helping others, praying for us, and encouraging us in our faith. Wealthiness is referred to often in scripture (Matthew 19:24, James 1:11, Matthew 6:24), not as a death sentence but rather a warning: Money can very easily take the place of God because it provides a false sense of the security we can only find in Him. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV)
