At first glance, Jay Z is worlds away from Olamide. After a brief study, both rappers have a few things in common. Pulse Music takes a look at the five things that makes Olamide Nigeria’s version of Sean Carter. An Album Every Year – The first similarity between both rappers has to be their output. Jay Z released eight albums in eight years (that’s from Reasonable Doubt in 1996 to The Black Album in 2008). Olamide is threading a similar path. On November 11, 2014 Olamide would have released four studio albums in four years. The yearly release of a solo album makes Olamide a prime hustler in the footsteps of Hip Hop’s ultimate hustler Jigga. Replaced A Legend Cut Short By Death – Olamide came on the scene with his first official single ‘E Ni Duro’ a few months after the death of the Nigerian rap legend Da Grin. The CEO was seen not only as the King of Yoruba rap but King of Nigerian rap. After his death, it was a huge task for Olamide to fill his shoes. Olamide’s debut album didn’t fill Da Grin’s void. His subsequent album YBNL did a better job. This was the same scenario after Biggie’s untimely death. Jay Z looked like the contender for the throne of King Of New York, but his album In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 was panned by critics. His follow up albums however saw him ascend to Biggie’s throne. Building His Own Label - Hip Hop artists are known to create their vanity labels just to please their egos. What separates Jay Z from the pack is that he built a record label that was in every word a record label. With Roc-A-Fella he helped make careers for Beanie Siegel, Memphis Bleek, Freeway, and of course Kanye West. Even though his YBNL imprint is still young, Olamide is already making moves to establish his artists Lil’ Kesh and Viktoh as independent acts. The success of ‘Shoki’ shows he is heading towards the right direction. Private Life – Jay Z is a notoriously private man. Prior to hooking up with Beyonce, details about his private and love life were scarce. Rumours had it he had flings with Foxy Brown, Blu Cantrell, Rosario Dawson and Christina Milian, but no one had any proof. Even with Beyonce, it took a while for Jay Z to come out publicly that he was dating the pop singer. Olamide is pretty much like this. (which he is highly protective of) who is dating or who is romantically inclined with has hardly made the papers or the blogs. Bosses move in silence Ruthless – To make it to the top you have to be ruthless. Jay Z doesn’t play around. He cut ties from Damon Dash, his longtime business partner, when he felt he could no longer take him to the next level. The decision worked well for him as Jay Z has created a global business empire since doing away with Damon Dash. After his first album, Olamide left the label that signed him on, ID Cabasa‘s Coded Tunes imprint. He also let go of the veteran producer. Before then he cut ties with his first manager Toni Payne. Olamide went on to create his own label YBNL, and hired Tony Nwakolor as his manager. When Tony started having other music interests, Olamide didn’t renew his contract with him. He had a female manager for a while after Tony Nwakolor, before firing her.
