At its peak, almost a quarter of million people had to be evacuated because of the floods in Malaysia. Imagine the entire population of Bishan and Toa Payoh moved from their homes to shelters – old, young and infirm included. No country, no matter how well prepared, can cope with the scale of such natural disasters alone. Even essential items become hard to come by. Clean water – which all of us here take for granted, gushing out at the turn of a tap – was not available to those affected. I was glad that the SAF could help with our water purification units in their moment of need. So far, we have provided more than 130,000L of purified drinking water to villagers. As the situation has improved considerably with clean tap water available, SAF units will wind down operations and return to Singapore. We want to thank the MAF and villagers in Kelantan for their warm hospitality towards our SAF troops. - Ng Eng Hen
