At last nights Town Council I again raised my concerns over the delays in public lights been repaired once they have been reported by members of the public.Below is the answer I received but I do not accept the reply as earlier this month a resident who lives in Mullingar town contacted me to tell me about a public in their area which was reported several times by various people living in the area. The light remained un repaired for a number of weeks and with the dark evenings there was a genuine concern among local residents of anti social behaviour or house break ins occurring. This resident decided enough was enough and repaired the light themselves and passed me on the details to ensure the contractors are not paid for this job. This is not good enough and I have demanded that the Council immediately engage with the contractors and put stricter timelines in place. 2.17 Cllr.Glynn:To ask Westmeath County Council to review its agreement with the public lights contractor, as significant delays are being reported in lights being repaired. Reply:Status report as of Friday 21st March 2014: Westmeath County Council currently maintains 9,264 public lights. At this point in time 98.6% of these lights are lit with 132 lights reported as currently unlit. A job ticket is raised for every “light out” fault reported. The contractor has 10 working days to attend to these faults but on the practical understanding that the more complex repairs such as cable repairs etc involving specialist crews may involve further attendance and therefore may take longer. 2194 job tickets were issued in 2013. 18 job tickets were issued over the last month (22nd Feb 2014 - 21st Mar 2014) Of these132 lights reported as currently unlit, 30 job tickets remain open after 10 working days. Of these 30 tickets that remain open, 21 have been inspected but 5 are identified as having access issues, 2 are awaiting ESB works, 2 have parts out of stock, 1 has a cable fault and 11 have been the subject of sustained vandalism requiring complete replacement with a more robust installation. The contractor is currently working in the county and in all likelihood has already attended these remaining 9 job tickets, but has yet to report them on the system.
