At last the Nakuru County Government has published a list of appointees to the County Executive Committee, County Public Service Board and Chief Officers. Something to congratulate the government (including the Assembly) for is that it has publicly announced the date for public vetting (Friday 15th November 2013). Following this development, I wish to urge the people of Nakuru, especially those with the interests of the county at heart to spend the one week to dig and delve into the backgrounds of the appointees and make any negative finding public to ensure the county is run by men and women of the highest integrity possible. It will be important to establish beforehand if the candidates are suitably qualified for the positions (we cannot afford to have a teacher in health when we require his/her skills and expertise in education); their professional backgrounds (where they have been working and if they registered any positive results or are they full os scandals). It will also be critical to look at the entire list and seek to establish if the gender principle has been followed; does the list represent the face of Kenya or are we again rewarding political loyalty and cronyism. Already, concerns are being raised that some individuals in the list may not have attended interviews and that atleast one of them has a god-father (real father) who may have influenced her appointment. One of the candidates has been the treasurer in the defunct County Council that was riddled with tales of impropriety.... Well, we all have a homework to do before Friday!
