At least 200 elephants were killed according to estimates made after the recent ivory seizures at the port of Mombasa. Officials from Kenya Revenue Authority ( KRA) have revealed that the container intercepted at the port on Monday was stuffed with 444 pieces of ivory weighing 3.2 tonnes. According to the officials, this meant more than 200 elephants were killed by poachers who have now made the port a common route to lucrative ivory markets overseas. There were fears last evening that the port might be blacklisted internationally because of its use by the elephant poaching cartel to ship out the illegal cargo. “We have established the ivory seized on Monday evening weighed in excess of three tonnes,” said KRA senior assistant commissioner Ms Fatma Yusuf.
