At long last – someone gets it. The former head of the Australian Army and the director of Canberra University’s National Security Institute, Professor Peter Leahy, has warned that the war against radical Islam “is likely to last for the rest of the century. We must be ready to protect ourselves and, where necessary, act pre-emptively to neutralise the evident threat. Get ready for a long war.” Another former senior Australian army officer, Michael Krause, said he “absolutely agreed” and added: ““I have seen these people. I know how they think. I know how they fight. There is no compromise possible. These long wars require long commitment to outlast radical ideas and provide viable, meaningful alternatives which require a whole-of-government response, rather than assuming the military can or should do it all.’’ These men understand what the UK government and much of the west refuses to acknowledge: that we are not facing a threat from a few extremists; nor that Islamic extremism arises from local grievances whose solution will dissolve that extremism; nor that the savage insurgencies in Iraq and elsewhere are nothing to do with us. We are facing an Islamic holy war declared upon the non-Muslim and not-Muslim-enough world. And holy wars can last for decades, and more. To win them requires that they are recognised for what they are and that there is as a result a total commitment to the long haul. That’s why Britain’s refusal to acknowledge that it faces holy war has produced Londonistan and the global export of British murderous Islamic fanatics. That’s why the west’s panicked scuttling from its half-hearted and half-baked campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan has strengthened and multiplied the Islamists. That’s why Obama’s overtures to Iran, Turkey and Qatar and his hostility to Israel are so calamitous for western defences.
