At nightfall, the water in the garden’s marble pool turned black. Its taut surface mirrored a young woman sitting cross-legged on the mossy brink. From her bowed head, long hair spilled in red ringlets over her swollen breasts and pregnant belly and touched the quiet water with ripples. She gazed forlornly at the wobbly reflections of tree-hung lanterns and swaying temple columns. In this pool, she had created magic and had created chimerical worlds, a phantom cosmos replete with pinwheel galaxies and motes of planets numberless as gusted pollen.
