At our Aldershot Time to Share event Ian Sutherland brought along his uncle’s First World War signalling lamp. These wooden cased, battery operated lamps were used mainly for local use from trench to trench. Operators would receive the message through a periscope or telescope. In this video, Ian describes the lamp’s different parts; he shows the original bulb which is still intact and explains how the lamp works. Its condition is impressive considering it was given to Ian, by his father, as a toy to play with!
