At precisely 3 AM, I awoke with a familiar ache in my lower back on the right side. I knew almost immediately that I was having a kidney stone attack. The three previous attacks all occurred about a year apart from each other - it had been over a year and a half since my last attack. And I had been hoping that, that phase of my life was behind me. If you never experienced a kidney stone attack, count yourself lucky as I can assure you it is one of the most intense and on going, (as in hours), painful experiences that you ever have to endure. This time I was a little better prepared than before as I had on hand some potent prescription pain medicine. First thing, once I recognized what the problem was, I popped one of those pain pills and then went back to bed to await my fate. This time instead of an ever rising crescendo of pain and agony, there just a continued dull ache and when it really got bad I would break out in a sweat. After a few hours, it passed and I drifted off to sleep. Believe, from now on, I will always keep a supply of this pain killer on hand and I recommend that you do the same.
