At risk is a nice way of putting this, so as not to scare off those readers who have not already come to the conclusion, that continual existence for humans on earth is just not really going to happen. Sorry to be the spoilt milk in your morning cuppa but if you look at most scentific and environmental movements there has been, for a while now, the growing school of thought that we have just destroyed our planet and continue to do so in trying to make the world sustainable ... but sustainable for whom? I hate being percieved as the pessismist by so many. Mainly due to the amount of information I research. If you cant switch your train of thought away from the selfish attitude of trying to obtain some kind of sustainable environment for just one species (homo sapiens) and move to a greater more fulfilled way of life of forgetting about our survival as being some kind of holy grail. Make your decisions based on a holisitic environment where your daily decisions are to ignore what is good for humans and try to save what is left of the flora and fauna. The truth is humans will survive the next three centuries by either leaving earth and colonising outside of our planet or we have to adapt here and live within our technology - there will be a much smaller number of us by then anyway due to the 6% crop loss with each 1 degree rise in temperatue ( so according to conservative estimates (that dont take into account natural disasters or land degredation at all) there will be a 30% crop loss by 2040 which will result in the death of 300 million lives per year from starvation ... the plants and animals however need all the help they can get from us. Then maybe with all this going on a higher intelligence will arise from it all and we can see humans taking their rightful place once again on earth. As a fellow entity of a whole.
