At several recent conventions, I was asked what song Ill be using for the video coverage. Its rare that I have one picked out ahead of time. I can only think of three instances I already had a song in mind: Supernature Love by Digikid84 for Dragon Con 2011, Eat More Cakes remix of Music Sounds Better for Katsucon 2014 and Nunca by TRAILS AND WAYS for Colossalcon. I try to find music that reflects the unique vibe of each event - whether its chill, hyper, silly, epic, etc.. Since I dont always know the vibe ahead of time, I often pick music afterwards. Its one of many reasons it takes so long to edit BDBs videos - sometimes Im still desperately searching for the right piece of music to communicate my experience. I keep a folder of potential music and in my downtime I try to buff up that folder. This may involve browsing royalty free sites or asking artists for permission to use their music. Theres a moment in editing where Ive trimmed all my video clips to their best moments, and have them sitting right next to each other. I take various tracks and throw them against the video clips, to see if magic happens - to see if the right emotion comes across. This particular moment in editing, playing with different music possibilities, seeing how it effects the emotion, is my favorite moment in editing event videos. Sometimes I even toss in tracks I love but cant get the rights to just for fun. Im doing this part of editing tonight, which makes me happy. For AZ 2013, theres no way I would have listened to the first track on its own and thought hey thats perfect for an event video. But because I like to throw a few odd choices in the mix when I test out possibilities against the footage - I realized this actually reflects my own experience at this event the best. youtu.be/2ONw5oEMITk
