At the Battle of Nashville, 150 years ago today, the 13th United States Colored Troops achieved something virtually unheard of in the war with their courage and sacrifice: they not only earned the awed respect of white Union troops who witnessed their efforts; they also garnered heartfelt praise from an opposing Confederate general in his official report. One Union officer wrote: “I never saw more heroic conduct showed on the field of battle than was exhibited by this body of men so recently slaves.” Emancipation of all the nations slaves, which wasnt to be adopted as policy by the Union until early the following year, became a reality largely through the courage and activism of African Americans in seeking freedom for themselves and others, which gradually altered public opinion about slavery, especially among northern whites. #EmancipationToEquality
