At the Copa, Copacabana .... The first town I visited in Bolivia - TopicsExpress

At the Copa, Copacabana .... The first town I visited in Bolivia was Copacabana (cue Barry Manilow music ha ha!), on the edge of Lake Titicaca. After crossing the Peru / Bolivia border, most people continued straight through to La Paz, but I decided to break the trip up and was really glad I did! It was hard to find mid range, clean accommodation with good ratings, but I came across La Cupola by accident and was really glad I did! It was the cheaper hotel next to the expensive one, and was quiet and relaxing, with amazing views, being perched on top of the hill overlooking the bay of the lake, with views of the whole town and landscape! I got such a lovely quiet private room and bathroom for $15 a night, it was such a treat! They also had a deal where you could use the hot tub of the fancy hotel next door, for only 15 Bo. (about $3 AUD), so I booked the last spot for 10pm! But a thunderstorm had started and it was raining, so as I was lead to the hot tub I nearly had second thoughts and third thoughts when I realised it was outside! Have you ever had an outdoor hot tub in a thunderstorm at 4,000m, with an umbrella propped over you in the tub to keep the sleeting rain off your face? I decided to do it and amazingly got toasty warm and super relaxed, and the manager gave me longer than my hour as I was the last for the night. It was a treat, so warm and clean with no chlorine, and when I went back the next day, it had the most brilliant views as well ... best . hot . tub . ever!!! I kept thinking of my Confest friends, you have to come to Copacabana and check this place out! I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and even got the most delicious truches (trout) dish in the local restaurant for about $4 AUD, which I had for lunch both days it was so good ... aah I want to come back one day! Heading to the bus on the way out, I spotted some llama embryos (truly!) and also children cooking the food outside a restaurant, you see some bizarre things in these places! As we headed out on the way to La Paz, the bus had to do a lake crossing as well as the earlier border crossing. We all boarded the boat as the bus came along on a large vehicle ferry, it was kind of cool to see our bus floating on the lake ha ha! All in all things went fairly smoothly. The border crossing itself was a little tricky, as I only had half the necessary forms (as they ran out as they were handing them out), but then they just shrugged their shoulders and said it didnt matter anyway! Then they wanted some forms but not others, so with a bit of a mad scramble and trying to make sure I was in the right queues, everything got done and the bus didnt leave me behind (which has happened to some tourists!) We were with Pan Americano who were fine in the end, and great value, and all was well!
