At the Kingston Writers Fest I had a great conversation about magazine writing with American journalist Scott Anderson. He said that writers should be wary of doing too many department stories - the 500 to 2000 word pieces at the front and back of magazines - because once a writer is known for writing short pieces, he or she can be pigeonholed and wont get offered feature assignments. Anyone out there in magazine land, friendly editors and writers, have any thoughts on this?
