At the School Board Meeting on Tuesday, November 18th, during a discussion of secondary capacity under the Capital Improvement Plan, the Superintendent recommended that the School Board select “Option SWE3,” which would build (i) a 900-seat school at the Wilson School site to house the H-B Community (including Stratford, HILT and AS programs) along with a 126-seat pre-K program, (ii) a 1000-seat neighborhood middle school at H-B’s current site on Vacation Lane, and (iii) an addition at an existing middle school (most likely at Kenmore) to house 300 students. The SWE3 option includes an anticipated 10% increase in H-B enrollment. A link to the presentation made by APS staff at the meeting is here - boarddocs/vsba/arlington/Board.nsf/files/9QZ52G6AD587/$file/E-1%20CIP_SecondarySeats_141118.pdf The SWE3 option has been endorsed by the APS Facilities Advisory Committee. In statements made at last night’s meeting, Laura Saul Edwards, Co-Chair of the H-B Woodlawn PAC, and Kristen Colston, Chair of the H-B Capacity Committee, stated that the H-B community believes that the SWE3 option is appropriate and should be adopted by this School Board for three reasons: (1) it is a cost-effective way of delivering the middle school seats that are needed in the location where they are needed, (2) it co-houses the H-B Community with a pre-K program, as is done in other Arlington secondary schools, and (3) it leaves funds available for future middle school seats in other parts of the county. Other options that would have put H-B only at the Wilson site resulted in fewer new middle school seats. Please review the presentation and come to the next PAC Meeting on Monday, November 24th, from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm, in the Library. Abby Raphael, our School Board liaison, will be the guest speaker, discussing the CIP and answering questions.
