At the appointed time, the men of Easy Company lobbed grenades over a railroad embankment and surged into the German city of Aachen, shooting, shouting and, in the back of their minds, hoping they’d live past this day. Nick Nackos, now a 93-year-old St. George resident in declining health, remembers the bitter fighting that began the morning of Oct. 13, 1944, and the uncertainty that taxed him and his fellow troops of the 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
