At the gym I was asked to ‘cover’ my arms, legs, and ears - TopicsExpress

At the gym I was asked to ‘cover’ my arms, legs, and ears because my skin made another individual feel ‘uncomfortable’. This request is not only a slap across the face; it resonates with a deep sadness inside of me. I refuse to apologize for the discomfort my (moderate to severe) psoriasis brings to the eyes of my peers. This is a chronic, autoimmune disease; it is not contagious. I have struggled with physical and emotional distress associated with this condition since the age of 7. Before asking anyone to ‘cover it up’ so you can be ‘discomfort’ free for 5, 10, or 20+ minutes remember people live and struggle with this disease. Every. Single. Day. Everyone has the right to ‘bare arms’. We are all humans; our differences make us unique and beautiful. The world would be a better place if we just took time each day to perform a random act of kindness. Rather than ostracize, let us celebrate our differences! In the place of rude stares, disgusted faces, and snide comments I challenge those who do not suffer from this disease to look into the eyes of an individual with psoriasis and strike up a positive conversation. Ask how the day is going? Favorite band? What’s the best restaurant in town? Ask for help with a rep at the gym. If you are curious about the condition ask politely, or visit psoriasis.org. I would greatly appreciate if you would like or share my story to help raise awareness regarding psoriasis, and to help fight discrimination of any kind. ~ Charlotte I. Lee
