At the local skate park Sol says to me, Id really like to just sit and watch you skate. Me, Good, because Id really like to watch you surf. Youre going to learn with me this summer arent you? Sol, Yep. Later I said to Dan, Ive decided to use the full force of my maternal influence while its at its peak to get our children into the waves. Right now Joaquin will follow me just about anywhere but this is a pivotal time with Sol. If he catches the surf bug...well, that would just be an amazing thing to share together. As I get closer to my next ink on Dec.11, Ive been thinking a lot about history, ancestry, and the stories we pass on. Rell Sunn influenced me from afar and this summer Id like to embody some of the grace she represented to me and pass that on to my children. Since the age of 18, the ocean has been my church and my greatest spiritual teacher. Im tempted to say that Ive missed my communion during these years of childbearing but the ocean has never left me, it has been with me every step of the way as Ive rode the waves of pregnancy and motherhood. And now I must go train on the elliptical to Sons of Anarchy because clearly that is the best way to get fit.
