At the risk of making everyone on FB jealous, I have to tell you a story. Anyone who knows me knows I am a football nut. On Wednesday, the day before yesterdays epic four-game day, a 12 hour span that should go down as one of the most awesome days of college football ever, my sister texted me and told me she had bought something for me and I should pick it up by Friday. She lives about an hour away, so as much as I love presents, I wondered if it HAD to be Friday. She answered I needed to come to her house, (she cant drive--can no longer pass the sight exam), no later than Saturday morning. My mind immediately pictured something that was going to spoil. (Did she buy me a lobster? crab legs? a watermelon with a fast approaching Buy-by date?) So, I drove out to Litchfield this afternoon...only to find no one home at her house. I called her, and she said go in and go into the guest room, your present is in there. I followed her instructions, opened the guest room door and immediately started to cry, because sitting next to the bed I found a brand new 32 Smart TV. Now, I know, that this might not be the most impressive thing when compared to the humongous TVs available, but, as my sister said, Youve been watching football on an old square TV with a screen smaller than my computer monitor. (True, but its what we had and it wasnt broke, so...) And besides, our living room is only about 15x18 so a huge TV would definitely be overkill. The old TV was so small I couldnt read any of the numbers on the screen. I had to use my phone app to keep track of minutes left, etc. As to why she wasnt home, she didnt want to argue with me about the gift being too big, so she and a friend went out when I said I was on my way. Weve always been a small gift family; Christmas is sweaters and hoodies, birthdays are movie dates or scented candles...you get the idea. The sight of that box left me blubbering like an idiot. I know she just sold her old house--one that has been on the market for years--and that sale is a chance for her to take the kind of financial breath she hasnt been able to take for a long time and that made me very happy for her. Nothing like this would ever have crossed my mind...ever, ever ever. As I write this, Im watching a TV that looks enormous, with numbers I can read and sound I can hear. And you all should know, MY SISTER IS THE BEST AND MOST AWESOME PERSON IN THE WORLD!!!! Bring on the playoffs!!!!! Thank you, Patti. I love you.
