At the start of Advent, I was teaching my Latin students about Veni, Veni Emmanuel, and that the verses of the hymn are adapted from the O Antiphons. They loved learning this part: The initial letters of each of the O Antiphons form two Latin words when you start with the last antiphon, which is sung Dec. 23, and go back to the first. From Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia - the Latin words ero cras are formed, meaning, “Tomorrow, I will come.” 11 year old Benjamin exclaimed, O cool! Indeed.
