At the suggestion of some very wise cousin, I have been reviewing some of the stuff I wrote and posted during moms final days. Its hard to go back to that place, but not impossible anymore. It brings up some sentiments at the time that I didnt really share. While Im sure most people were trying to be polite and keep a respectful distance, the biggest thing me and my family needed at the time was the presence of others, if for nothing else than to share some sense that the loss we were going through was universal and not as alienating and individualized as it was. I told someone at the time that if we had gone through this on the reservation, our family would have spent as much time with us as possible, because on the reservation, we understand loss and how to shepherd others through it in a cathartic and healthy way. It taught me a great deal about empathy not being the same as sympathy. This talk always comes up in my head every time I think about it. Watch it if you have 3 minutes.
