At the time of His ascension JESUS disciples had to be out of their minds with joy, apprehension, and the desire to never lose sight of Him again. Yet here was their Lord and once again he was leaving. Where He was going they were not allowed to follow. Perhaps they were thinking, Here we go again. We just got Him back, how can we bear to lose Him again? Were they tempted to feel abandoned at the thought of those bleak days prior to the resurrection of their Lord? The anticipation of a return to that hopeless time may have pulled them toward discouragement, Yet here stood their Lord with a final request. Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the Promise of the Father. Please dont go JESUS might have been the cry of their hearts, yet they never voiced it . . . How they must have hung on His every word. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. -- Acts 1:8, NKJV Surely they were not adverse to receiving power. These men had walked the earth with JESUS. They knew what power looked like. Not the power of men, the kind that leaves people jockeying for position in corner offices with window views. Not the seats at the finest restaurants or the choicest views in the temple. Not the fine clothing and designer suits or even the furnishings in the High Priests home. The power JESUS spoke of was the power to heal the sick, the power to raise the dead, and the power to restore a lunatic son to his fathers side. It was the power to bring a smile to the lips of a woman who reached out in faith to touch the hem of His garment. Was this the kind of power JESUS was talking about? The power to stop pain? To revive a child who was brain dead, or bring a wife and mother back to life after a fatal car crash? Just what kind of power was JESUS talking about?
