At this moment of terror in France and around the world, we are reminded of the words of our teacher, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel on this, his 42nd yaretzheit. Religion is a means, not an end. It becomes idolatrous when regarded as an end in itself. Over an above all being stands the Creator, who transcends all. To equate religion and the Holy One is idolatry... We will gather tonight at 7:30, as we do on every Friday night. We will welcome the Divine presence of Shabbat, and remember Rabbi Heschel and other dear ones we have lost, including those who have been murdered in France. We will celebrate the beauty of Shabbat, and the beauty of a society that recognizes the dignity of different ways of approaching, of searching for the Holy One.
