At this point the Sit and Stare Policy is officially the policy in the East Meadow School District. It is a very sad thing that we are one of the 6 districts left here on Long Island that are choosing this policy. Our district says that there is no right to opt-out or refuse testing because it is not stipulated by state law, but it is certainly a federal right and children should not be caught inside the crossfire of the testing debate. Federal rights overrule state rights. I have heard Mr. Deangelo and others state said that there is no sit and stare policy because they let the kids read…...the test…., is an absurd notion and if anyone believes that our district is not a sit and stare district they obviously do not understand how words can be twisted. For those of you who have children taking the test, you may want to consider how disruptive this sit and policy is to your kids who are taking the test. My kids last year were forced to sit and stare and on many occasions were reprimanded by the proctor to be quiet. Children get fidgety when made to sit for a prolonged length of time. It also is not a fair policy for our wonderful teachers who have their APPR tied to these high-stakes testing. This punitive policy is affecting all of our kids. If you want your voice heard, please contact our Board of Education and our Superintendent and tell them to change the policy for it is not fair to your child who is taking the test to be disturbed by the refusals.
