At this time of year, it is imperative that we reflect on what is most important to us. When I say us I am no just speaking of what is meaningful to any one of us as individuals. That in itself is of great significance, but what I am speaking of is what is important to us as a society, as people, as human beings. To me what matters the most is that somehow I play a part in bringing to an end, or at least in helping alleviate, some of the pain and suffering in this world. It weighs so heavily upon me at times. When I add that to my own troubles and strife, it can almost become too much for me to bear. So, I have to do something, anything, not only for others but for myself. It would be wise of us all to do the same. So what is it we can do? Well, to me it is fairly simple and is the answer to the question so many of us ask in regards to the meaning of life. All we must do is leave this world a little better than it was before we came into it. It is our ultimate purpose and it is not an impossible feat. Sadly, in spite of that, so many of us seem to be failing in accomplishing such a task. I include myself among those who have yet to find success in reaching such a practical goal. That being said, I have not given up. It is much of the reason why I am so vocal and passionate about my political beliefs. Yes, I often state that reason, logic, and common sense are why I come to the conclusions that I do. But what powers that motivation, what makes me so committed to finding those answers, is always compassion, empathy, simply doing what is right, and the belief that for our lives to have true meaning we must make this world a better place. That is why I am a Liberal, a Progressive, a Democrat, one who leans left. I am no fool, there is no doubt each party has its flaws and self interests. However, one party seems to be doing much more to fight against that which brings such sorrow to so many lives while the other does not appear to be doing that much. As a matter of fact, I often feel they are doing just the opposite. I cant imagine any of those who I call friend, those who I believe to be good people, those who call themselves Christians or Americans truly want that. I think many have just been mislead. Somewhere along the line they got caught up on this self reliability and responsibility argument and a fundamental lesson of life got misplaced. That lesson being that we not only help others by aiding them, we help ourselves. It is the way of universe. It has been discovered through philosophy, through religion, through the scientific gathering and analysis of data. We build up ourselves by building up others not by tearing them down. When they rise, we rise, when they heal, we heal, with their happiness, comes our happiness, but this works both ways. When they fall, we fall, when they hurt, we hurt, with their sorrow comes our sorrow and oh, what sorrows, what hurt, how far we have fallen. It doesnt have to be this way. It doesnt have to end by it all being destroyed before we build it back up. Lets stop tearing each other down. Lets stop hating each other and being haters. What does that accomplish? Isnt there enough of that already in the world? Why would any of us ever feel the better option for someone is to make their lives harder. Ask yourself, if why you think that is truly because you believe it is in their best interest or is it because maybe, just maybe, you are a little bitter that someone wasnt as kind to you. I am not doubting that at times tough love, so to speak, isnt the right choice but that is more the exception to the rule, not the rule itself. If there is one thing that most of us come to realize one way or another, at some point in our lives, is that the vast majority of us only gets back as much as we have given out. There isnt a great mind or widely renowned historical or public figure who hasnt said something similar to that. So, if you feel you havnt seen much of a return on your investment, it most likely isnt because you have already given too much, its because you havent given enough. Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others. ~Plato Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile. ~Albert Einstein “No one has ever become poor by giving.” ~Anne Frank “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” ~Charles Dickens “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” ~Maya Angelou “Doing nothing for others is the undoing of ourselves.” ~Horace Mann “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” ~Booker T. Washington “He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help.” ~Abraham Lincoln If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” ~Barack Obama Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you cant help them, at least dont hurt them. ~Dalai Lama It is your own conduct which will lead you to reward or punishment, as if you had been destined therefor. ~The Prophet Muhammad “All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts and made up of our thoughts. If a man speak or act with an evil thought, suffering follows him as the wheel follows the hoof of the beast that draws the wagon.... If a man speak or act with a good thought, happiness follows him like a shadow that never leaves him.” ~Buddha If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great. ~Jesus Christ
