At this time, only my mother and I were home. We knew that the time was coming when I would either be drafted or have to join. Next to Bertha and Frank’s house in Shawnee, Kansas, was a small house. My mother and I took some furniture and moved into that house so she would be closer to Bertha and Frank after if and when I would leave. The Japanese immediately occupied most of Southeast Asia, parts of China (what was then known as the Spice Islands ruled by the Dutch and what is now as Indonesia) and most of the Pacific Islands. It was going to be a long, hard struggle reclaiming all of this part they had taken over. Japan was such a small country and they needed the oil and rubber from these Southeast Asian countries to supply their war machine. Most of everyone’s life in the United States was changed by the Second World War. In fact, many are from all over the world. Many of the soldiers and sailors married girls from other countries. If you see a couple about my age, ask them where they are both from. More than likely, they will be from somewhere other than where they are living. The service men might have been from Michigan, Kansas, or New York. They ended up somewhere else after the service where they met a girl, fell in love, and married. So when you ever talk to one of those couples, ask them where they are from and you can believe, most of the time, they won’t be from the same place. Document 2. Military service After the Japanese attack on Pearl harbor admiral Nimitz was sent to Hawaii to analyze the situation. He said the Japanese made three mistakes. #1 they did not destroy our fuel supply . Which one fighter plane could have? #2 they did not destroy our dry docks. Which we needed to use to repair the damaged ships. #3 They attacked on a Sunday morning when many of the crews were ashore on liberty. I think four mistakes as our aircraft carriers were at sea.
