At times, it is a matter of great distress that you cannot spell the exact “ট” letter in English. Worst case scenario is when Bangla is written using English letters and the consequences my friend, are severe… বেত Becomes “Bat” জিত Becomes “Jet” রাত Becomes “Rat” জামার হাতা Becomes “Jamar Hata” (The walking dress) লতা Becomes “Lota” And Finally, of course… তানজিয়া Becomes টানজিয়া (Tanzia) You can provide many examples concerning other letters such as this one, ঠিক->Thik (In English, spelling is close to “Thick”, because “th” is “থ”). Now, it is a talent I appreciate in Bengali brains that, these brains instantly decide if it is “ট”, “ঠ” or “ত”- within the fraction of a second. This is quite a quality I’d say. As for my “টানজিয়া”, it can be quite irritating, if I choose to feel. It is hard to digest the scene it can suggest- but I think, at least I can console myself with the false consolation that there is alliteration in my name.
