At times, life can seem cruel and confusing. Things happen to us that makes us wonder why it happened in the first place; that we didnt deserve the act. But time and time again, the human will proves how strong we are and can be. Linda Alfinez-Maldonado proved yesterday to herself and the world how strong she can be, as well as her family. Yesterday, was one of the most heartfelt moments I ever had the pleasure to be a part of, to the point that I was overwhelmed with emotions. I never had the pleasure of meeting Angel, but I share his passion, as many of us do, and within the biker community- thats all we need. Within this sub-culture that we are blessed to be a part of, we all feel like we know each other. I know of no other sub-culture that says hi to one another when you dont know the person as we do when we are riding around. Conversations start up with total strangers with the same ease as a long lost friend. Reflecting on yesterday, I noticed that what at times seems random, is anything but. Everyone that knew Angel will tell you that he simply was an angel. Angels are protectors. Angel lost his life in order to protect his son. The ride as it turns out, was scheduled on the same exact date a year prior, that Angel went with his father-in-law to buy a bike and of all places, at the same location of Rick Case Honda. This ride could have been scheduled on any other day or location, but it wasnt. As we were arriving to Rick Case Honda, it started to rain. I said its raining. Anny Mejia Decena quickly corrected me and told me that isnt rain, those are tears. It wasnt raining anywhere else before or after, just that one cloud that hit us as we were arriving. At times there was a discussion of hiring a band, instead, DJ Hermen Martin was hired and the second Linda said Santanas Black Magic Woman was Angels favorite song, Hermen played it. That was not pre-arranged. With a band, this never would have happened. And to top it off, Hermen finished with Marc Anthonys Vivir Mi Vida, as Linda danced with her family and the wonderful message the lyrics convey. There is a lot to learn from all this: (1) PLEASE PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR BIKES!!! We are just like you. We are friends, sons/daughters, husbands/wives, fathers and grandfathers. Know that when you hit a biker b/c of your careless, reckless, and selfish behavior, you will cause serious injuries if not death, not to mention you will destroy families emotionally, psychologically, and even financially. (2) Love life, love each other. Living is a blessing. Dont throw away your life. Not everyone gets to die of old age; sometimes life is cut short and when it is, it is usually tragic. Life is too short to spend it doing bad, harming others. Spend it doing good and dont be selfish. If you pick up the phone while driving to text or you are distracting yourself with something, that is selfish behavior, and the results could irrevocably change your life forever in the worst ways possible. (3) Enjoy your passions and enjoy them often. Whether it is music or motorcycle riding, whatever it is, do it.
