At todays architect meeting the most contentious issue surrounded dedicated extended day space. I vaguely remember from the Runkle project that the MSBA doesnt fund dedicated extended day space but that Brookline found ways to work around that restriction and create dedicated extended day space at Runkle. It is my understanding that most of the other schools have dedicated space (unless some has been lost in the current crisis). It simply seems impossible to repurpose classroom space for extended day at the end of the day. Such a plan is a disservice to the classroom and extended day. Further having chaired a group that looked at after school uses and tried to prioritize uses between programs to create educational equity, child care, enrichment and athletics, I can say that very square inch of the school building is used and conflicts regularly arise. The OSC proposes charging extended day rent--that would almost seem to add insult to injury in the absence of dedicated space. I have never used extended day but it seems inconceivable to me that we wouldnt have dedicated space.
