At yesterdays Vans Warped Tour Concert at the Xfinity Center Mansfield Firefighters along with Events EMS treated 173 patients, transported 24 patients to local emergency rooms, and saw several more patients that did not need treatment for a total of 200 plus patients. A majority of these patients were heat related injuries with the rest being trauma related due to crowd surfing and the others minor medical problems. One Male patient was Medflighted to a Boston hospital with serious trauma related injuries. Most all of these injuries could have been avoided. Below are some important tips to avoid such injuries at summertime concerts: PLEASE REFRAIN FROM WEARING FLIP FLOPS AT CONCERTS!! Every single concert we treat a multitude of foot injures that could have been avoided by wearing proper footwear. Everything from broken toes, to traumatically removed toenails, puncture wounds, and lacerations. Wear loosefitting, lightweight clothing. Wearing excess clothing or clothing that fits tightly wont allow your body to cool properly. Wear light-colored clothing if youre in the sun. Dark clothing absorbs heat. Light-colored clothing can help keep you cool by reflecting the suns rays. Drink plenty of fluids and drink them early. Staying hydrated will help your body sweat and maintain a normal body temperature. Take extra precautions with certain medications. Be on the lookout for heat-related problems if you take medications that can affect your bodys ability to stay hydrated and dissipate heat. Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day. If you have been watching a band for an extended period take frequent breaks in the shade and rehydrate with water. Be cautious if youre at increased risk. If you take medications or have a physical condition that increases your risk of heat-related problems, avoid the heat and act quickly if you notice symptoms of overheating. Seek medical attention if you are dizzy, having vision problems, moderate to severe headaches, problems walking, feel like passing out, or anything else that is out of the ordinary for you. We would prefer that no one would crowd surf but we know that it still happens. If you do partake in crowd surfing please pay attention to the end of you surfing adventure and try and land on your feet. If you do hit your head or any other injury seek medial attention.
