Athletes, Politics, and Gardening My sons have asked me “why I didnt run for political office one more time”. I replied, “One of the saddest things to witness in life is an athlete that played one game or one season too long. All things have an ending. I was reminded of that conversation this afternoon while gardening. Inexplicably, I had become attached to one of the zucchini plants in my garden. It produced a ton of zucchinis. Ive never seen a plant produce so much. Even for a zucchini prolific would be an understated description of it. Today I pulled the plant up. It was still trying to produce more fruit. Our zucchinis from that bountiful plant were shared with and enjoyed by numerous households. We have loaves of zucchini bread. We ate what seemed like hundreds of pounds of zucchini salad. All this was produced from a single plant. But like that zucchini we should never quit. There is a place for us. We are a purpose not an accident. But one day we’ll accept the unalterable law of life, and Nature will produce another delightful bounty from another plant. All Things do come to an end. That’s what I learned from my garden.
