Athletes dont necessarily need more vitamins or minerals than the average person, they just need more food. - Marni Sumbal (Multi-Iron Man competitor) Talking to some women at the #wfs14 (Womens Fitness Summit 2014) this past weekend, they were surprised to hear that I dont take a multivitamin or any supplements, and have not for awhile. The only thing left in my cupboard is creatine. Why? Theres not really a need. If you are getting good quantities of nutrient-dense food (not just calorie-dense), than supplements are seriously a waste of both money and time for the most part. They can add to or enhance your daily diet, but never replace it. Problem is most people look to use them to fill holes in their nutrition when they need better overall nutrition in the first place! Those who are most willing to shell out for supplements usually are not hitting the most important components of a healthy lifestyle that support performance and body composition: 1.) Nutrient-rich food in enough quantities 2.) Sleep 3.) Coffee :D No supplement EVER replaces those. Ok, well caffeine powder.....I guess. (P.S. The coffee part is slightly tongue-in-cheek, but if you like having a pre-workout, it works basically the same as all those other ones and is way cheaper.)
