Attack on journalist Hamid Mir is highly condemned and this is the second attack on any journalist within few days where similar kind of attempt was made on Raza Rumi. So far around 97 journalists have been targeted in the country and BBC has already placed Pakistan on most dangerous place for journalists. However, it came as a “total shock” to hear the blame on ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) without any prove and must not be acceptable. As quoted in BBC Mr Mirs brother accused the ISI, of orchestrating the attack and had recently told family and colleagues that he had received threats from the ISI because of his political views. Off course, grieved family has a right of expression under existing law, but instead of straight blaming, may have followed the legal course of action by filing an FIR and opted for investigations by the concerned authorities and whosoever is found must be tried in Court of Law, or may have demanded Chief Justice to exercise “suo moto” for the incident. Here it is stressed that institution which has been accused may exercise its right to defend and knock the legal door for the justice though ISPR has already condemned the act and issued an official statement. Moreover, without any proof, the way Indian channel criticised and behaved is also condemnable. One must consider that to grade someone as “simple enemy” rather “enemy of state”, there exist some norms and standard i.e. the opponent must have some weight in the context. In this case, just on the pretext of having “different” political views, does Hamid Mir offer any kind of “weight” to be evaluated as “enemy” to ISI especially where there are people who carry even more opposite and critical views nearing to Anti-Pakistan views? When look around, one can find long list of journalists, legal experts, and distinguished writers who have been using their voices and pen more critically and aggressively at national and international forums against the various ills existing in Pakistan government and society but had never been victimised in recent history. Timing of attack suggests that this attack can also be termed as one of the series of efforts like khawaja’s episode to sabotage relations between Army and Government and an attempt to derail democracy in the country. Besides, this time the institution and personality being blamed must opt for clean and detailed investigations, may be the judicial enquiry and try to find the people who all are responsible for the incident. And after fair enquiry, if onus of responsibility falls on someone else, then ISI must exercise the right of compensation.
