Attention: Grand Strand and Pawleys Island FB friends. Please reserve your seat for the free environmental Earth Day Film Festival at the Tara Theatre. Free Film Festival to Celebrate Earth Day Local environmental groups to present a free screening of award-winning environmental documentaries on Earth Day PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC – In celebration of Earth Day on Tuesday April 22, two award-winning environmental documentaries will be screened in a free film festival in Pawleys Island at Tara Theatre in the Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort. Local environmental groups S.C.U.T.E. and the Chirping Bird Society are sponsoring the event in celebration of Earth Day to help raise awareness of plastic marine debris and other negative impacts of garbage on our environment. The films, “Plastic Paradise” and “Trashed” provide disturbing and provocative footage designed to educate students and citizens. The event begins at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance by calling Goffinet McLaren 843-235-1236,or Sue Habermier at 843-318-6878. Tickets will be held at will call and collected at the event. Event planners expect a full house to the two-hour event. Light refreshments will be served. Plush turtles and books and tee shirts will be on sale after the movies. Tara Theatre is located behind the Starbucks and registration area at the Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort, 14276 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island. The president of the Chirping Bird Society, local author and activist Goffinet McLaren, states that the groups are working together to “try to raise awareness about the devastating effects of plastics and how litter creates havoc for our ocean friends,” including she says, “our beloved Loggerhead turtles which nest on the Grand Strand every year.” “Plastic Paradise: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch” is a 4-time award-winning international film festival documentary that shows shocking footage of Midway Atoll, ground zero for the plastic debris that gathers there from three distant continents. The movie explains the effects of how our local plastic garbage ends up in the ocean, creating health and environmental problems world-wide. “Trashed” is a provocative investigation of the consequences of garbage. It asks: “when we throw trash away, where exactly is away?” The Chirping Bird Society raises awareness of the dangers of the Plastic Age to our health and oceans. The group encourages others to become aware of plastic debris and to speak out against it whenever possible. chirpingbirdsociety.blogspot S.C.U.T.E., S. C.
