Attention: To anyone who cares about high quality education of young children. The Missouri Department of Education is considering changing the certification of Early Childhood Professionals. Instead of being certified to teach from birth until 3rd grade, under the new changes they will only be certified from birth until pre-k. This will put our kindergarten through third grade children at a huge disadvantage. The Early Childhood program educates their teachers about child development, early childhood principles, and developmentally appropriate practice in curriculum for this specific age range of children. These are all topics that the typical elementary degree lacks. I am not saying that an elementary education degree is lacking in quality, but they arent trained to teach to this specific age of children and how they learn best. I encourage all of you to write to Paul Katnik at [email protected], and tell him why this is such a bad idea. The early childhood community has been working so hard for too many years to gain acknowledgement, and they are finally starting to make great gains. They have also benefited so many young children by implementing early intervention with learning impairments . If these changes occur this will be a huge step back for our children and the school systems.
