Read “The Lost Treasure Ship of the Mojave,” a novel I wrote about treasure hunting, and a Spanish Galleon laden with pearls from the Sea of Cortez that sailed up the Colorado river in about 1550 and became trapped in a lake which became the Sand Dunes of today’s Imperial Valley’s Mojave Desert. I spent the winter of 1948 -1949 in the Imperial Valley and traversed the sand dunes traveling frequently between El Centro and Yuma. I heard stories told by the locals about the treasure ship. I read firsthand accounts of its sightings from local newspapers in their archives. I became a lawyer and later became a Los Angeles County Judge and served for 31 years on the bench. I became interested in finding out what became of the treasure ship. I revisited the Imperial Valley. Traversed the sand dunes. Wondered what would happen if someone actually discovered it, and if whoever did could legally keep the pearls and treasure stored in its hold. I wrote a novel about it. Although it’s fiction it’s based upon scenarios that could have happened, and maybe to some extend did. There is information about treasure law in it.
