Attention UA Undergrads: my bio will appear on the ballot for Senator- at- Large as follows: My name is Olive Kapetanos and I am a freshman English major and History minor. I have strong interests in Political Science and Criminal Justice as well. Last semester I ran as a completely new student to UA and have since grown to recognize areas which could be improved as well as some of the fundamental components engrained in our schools nature which allow for the success of all students. I love how diverse our student body is in culture, viewpoints, academic and extra-curricular interests and strongly believe our diversity is one of our keys to success. With a wide array of student opinions and goals it becomes necessary to ensure all students are represented. I firmly believe that as a Senator-at-Large I would effectively communicate my constituents goals, needs, concerns and suggestions. I am a people person in every regard and am very politically-minded. I believe my social skills, immense desire to improve the lives of all students on and off campus, and my passion for participating in Democratic processes will serve me well in identifying topics of importance to our student body and plans to act on behalf of our student body. I would like to emphasize, just as I did when I ran last semester, that my personal goals and ideas will never be valued or focused on more than any goals or ideas made aware to me by fellow students. While I value my personal creativity, I find that representing the interests of the student body at large to be infinitely more important. With that said, I have several ideas of my own; chief among them being the need to increase interest in interactions between the undergraduate population and university administrators, including President Jones. I had the privilege of meeting President Jones at the Fall 2013 Semester Presidential Forum. It immediately became clear to me that President Jones is greatly dedicated to and passionate about our success, while also being quite interested in feedback from all students. Primarily, the students in attendance were graduate students, and in particular, members of the GSA. While I support the robust participation of GSA in such events, I would like to further develop the relationship between undergraduate students and President Jones. I believe this goal can bring about the introduction of a Presidential Forum Association; a group of students who personally collaborate with President Jones on shared goals. I would also like to encourage a more unified and readily accessible internship database. Our generation is finding an increasing demand for experiential learning- based resumes, so much to the point that a candidate for graduate school or a job may find a lack of internship experience to be the deciding factor. I intend to work on this goal through my new position as a Peer Career Advisor within Middle Earth, for which I am currently training. Lastly, I would like to strengthen campus- wide service activities, including volunteering, fund-raising and student-run initiatives. We have a great resource in our size and ability to positively impact the lives of other students, members of the Capital District community and people in our own home towns. I would love to see more involvement in these activities because I truly believe the world is within reach. In conclusion, I would love the opportunity to serve as a Senator-at-Large on behalf of all of our talented students and promise to be exceptionally dedicated and hard-working in achieving our collective goals. Thank you for your consideration.
