Attention all Civil War and Ohio history enthusiasts! Mark your calendars for 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 11. Were pleased to announce a special program that day by Dr. Eugene D. Schmiel, author of the new book Citizen-General: Jacob Dolson Cox and the Civil War Era (Ohio University Press, 2014). Dr. Schmiel will discuss the life and Civil War service of Jacob D. Cox, a native Ohioan and pre-war friend (and Ohio State Senate colleague) of James A. Garfield that eventually rose to the rank of Major General in the Union army during the Civil War. Cox later served as Governor of Ohio, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Copies of Citizen-General are available now in our Eastern National bookstore! Dr. Schmiel will gladly sign books after his presentation on October 11. Eugene D. Schmiel is a native Ohioan and holds a Ph.D. in history from The Ohio State University. He is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer.
