Attention all basketball lovers! On Monday 1st December, the U.S. Embassy Banjul kicked off its week-long basketball training clinic, led by former NBA player and international basketball coach Tommy Davis. During the course of the clinic, Coach Davis will be training students, P.E. teachers, as well as the regional NAYCONF teams on the fundamentals of basketball. This is Tommy Davis’ second visit to the Smiling Coast, as he hosted a similar clinic in Banjul in 2011. Today, Coach Davis is headed to Bansang to hold training sessions with students and regional teams up-country. Chargé d ’Affairs George Staples presided over the opening ceremony held at Independence Stadium, and expressed the importance of team sports, stating, “The benefits of youth participation in team sports extend far beyond just the improvement of athletic ability. Team sports have been shown to instill in young people a sense of character and self- confidence. Team sports also promote leadership, discipline and mutual respect.” Big thanks to the Peace Corps, as well as the Embassy Banjul Marine Detachment for lending their assistance during the clinic!
