Attention amateur astronomers, an asteroid will be making an appearance this Monday! This 1/2 kilometer wide near earth object will pass a mere 1.2 million kilometers from our planet making it visible with a typical backyard telescope or even a strong pair of binoculars! Look to the part of the sky where the constellation Cancer is located and search for a slowly moving object. In fact, it is estimated that the asteroid will appear (to you and I viewing from earth) to move the equivalent of the width of a full moon every 11 minutes. In reality, it will be traveling a modest 56,420 km/h (35,057 miles per hour). Make sure you take advantage of this opportunity because an asteroid of this size (and visibility factor) wont pass this close to earth until the year 2027! Mark your calendars ;-) Who wants to join me for an asteroid viewing party?
