Attorney General Patrick Morrisey Says IRS and Government Grant Scam Continue to Plague Eastern Panhandle Consumers MARTINSBURG — Attorney General Patrick Morrisey today reminded citizens to be on guard if they receive a phone call from someone saying they are from the federal government and either demand immediate payment for alleged back taxes or offer “free” government grants. “Our Office has received a number of complaints from Eastern Panhandle residents in the past month about both the IRS scam and the government grants scam. We cannot urge citizens enough to not fall for these scams, no matter how convincing the caller may be,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “These scams are not new, but callers can be very persuasive and intimidating.” Since November, nearly half of the scam-related complaints filed with the Attorney General’s Office have pertained to either the IRS scam or the grant scam. Many of those complaints have come from residents of the Eastern Panhandle. “We’ve had complaints from a number of residents in Hedgesville, Martinsburg, Falling Waters, and Berkeley Springs, but the callers are not limited by geography. These are nationwide scams that can impact consumers in the entire four-state region,” Morrisey said. To read the full release, please go to bit.ly/1rd2awU
