AuctionsPlus Pty Ltd. Market Comments Week Ending 16/01/2015 The first two weeks of trading for AuctionsPlus has demonstrated the power and importance of the auction selling system, both physical and online, in establishing a true floor price to the market. Prices have exceeded all expectations and in several instances buyers have been forced to pay well above quoted prices in order to secure stock. This week numbers doubled to 42,292 sheep and lambs, including almost 17,000 in the Store Lamb sale. Cattle numbers increased by 1,400 to 5,423 head, with significant numbers from Queensland. Pass in rates across all sales were again very low. Large numbers of both domestic and export feeder cattle gained strong feedlot support, with southern Queensland buyers particularly active in the past two weeks. Heavy feeder steers sold from 240c to 257c to average 247c, with notable sales including 385kg Brahman steers out of Bileola making 240c or $922, and Murray Grey/Angus cross steers weighing 432kg in northern NSW selling for $1111 or 257c. 300kg-350kg steers made from 226c to 285c to average 252c, including 311kg Santa cross and Angus cross steers making $885, and crossbred steers at Talwood weighing 342kg selling for $900. Backgrounder steers under 300kg sold from 238c to 276c to average 260c, and similar weight heifers made 221c to 284c averaging 253c. With all the hype around feeder steer prices at present, it is worth noting that the improvement in heifer prices has the gap between steers and heifers closer than it has been in a long while. Plenty of demand for yearling heifers as replacement females saw 300kg-350kg heifers made 220c to 258c to average 237c, topping at $800 for Charolais cross heifers at Merriwa. The heavier end of the heifer offering were primarily Angus heifers, averaging 237c with a top price of $990 for 16 and 17 month old heifers weighing 446kg. Breeder females are also enjoying the current spike in prices. Young Angus females with calves sold from $1280 to a top of $1700 for second calvers at Inverell with 248kg calves. In QLD, mixed age Droughtmaster cows, rejoined and with Droughtmaster calves at foot sold for $1300 at Blackall, and young Santa cows and calves out of Glenmorgan made $1115.
