Auditions in Melbourne for “Crazy for You”, 16th to 22nd June. BABIRRA Music Theatre, Nunawading. (VIC) Crazy for You is a romantic comedy with a book by Ken Ludwig and music and lyrics by one of broadways most prominent song-writing teams – George and Ira Gershwin. Crazy for You won the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical and was professionally staged in Melbourne in 1997 starring Philip Gould and Georgie Parker. Since then, this beautiful classic has been revived on less than a handful of occasions. Babirra Music Theatre is proud to bring this wonderful offering back to the Melbourne stage in October this year, with a team ready to breathe the bubbles into this Gershwin masterpiece! Crazy For You is a high-energy comedy, which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music! Set in the early 1930’s, the production centres on the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do playboy, whose dream in life is to dance. Despite the serious efforts of his mother and soon-to-be-ex-fiancée, Bobby achieves his dream after an inconsequential escapade to the Nevada Desert! Memorable Gershwin tunes include I Can’t Be Bothered Now, I Got Rhythm, Nice Work if You Can Get It and Someone to Watch Over Me. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Please prepare one traditional musical theatre piece showcasing your vocal range or ability to perform a character in the style of the show. All auditionees may be required to read an excerpt from the script. An accompanist will be provided, so please bring sheet music in your key. CD music or A Capella is not acceptable. Please arrive 10 or 15 minutes prior to your audition time, to allow time to fill in your audition form and discuss your song with our accompanist. Please provide an up to date photo and resume to be attached to your audition form. The Production Team is to be fully informed at the audition of your availability throughout the rehearsal period – a written list of conflicting dates would be most helpful. CHOREOGRAPHY CALL Attendance at the choreography call will be by invitation. Please let us know if you are auditioning as a dancer when you make your booking. Invitations will be issued after the Wednesday 18 June audition session. Auditionees on Sunday 22 June will be advised at the end of their audition if they are required for the choreography call. The choreography call will begin with a character/movement piece followed by an advanced/technical routine including tap. You will be expected to demonstrate either your ability to perform movement with personality and spunk and/or your capacity to handle more complicated choreography. Please wear something comfortable and appropriate. Those attending the advanced routine will be required to bring jazz and tap shoes. Note: We are not just looking for a cast of trained dancers, so we encourage those who can perform choreography convincingly – and can demonstrate resilience and a willingness to learn! CHARACTER CALL-BACKS Call-back invitations will be issued after the choreography call. Those invited will be provided with callback material – vocal and dialogue. CASTING BRIEF The cast of our Crazy for You must be a full cast of characters who can confidently bring to life two contrasting worlds – the 1930′s extravagant New York Follies and the primitive local mining town in the Nevada Desert. We are looking for a tight cast with performers who have an innate sense of comic timing and love to be on stage! This is the show for performers who want to be involved in an all round fun, energetic, visually beautiful, dance spectacular! Crazy for You is a rarely performed “bucket list” show – we can’t wait for the team to breathe fresh new sparkle into this all round gem! PRINCIPAL CAST BOBBY CHILD – A suave and charismatic song-and-dance man! The son of a prominent East Coast banker who longs for a life in the follies. Our Bobby must be a dancer, singer and all round charmer! Age: 25+, Vocal: Baritone. POLLY BAKER – Polly is a western sweetheart, but a tomboy with a witty tongue. An Anne of Green Gables type, who sings and moves beautifully. Age: 25+, Vocal: Soprano/belt. BELA ZANGLER – A New York/Hungarian successful Broadway producer. The confidence and control of Vittorio Vidal (Charity) and El Gallo (Fantasticks), but with a sprinkle of Adolpho (Chaperone). Age: 30+ Vocal: Baritone. IRENE ROTH – A New York Society Debutant and Bobby’s fiancee. A Veronica Lake like Femme Fatale. Mysteriously seductive and good mover. Age: 25+, Vocal: Mezzo. LANK HAWKINS – Deadwood’s saloon proprietor. An arrogant and over confident Gaston type. No principal dancing required, but needs to be a very confident mover. Age: 30+, Vocal: Baritone. EVERETT BAKER – Polly’s loveable father. Age: 60+, Vocal: Baritone. LOTTIE CHILD (CAMEO) – Bobby’s overbearing and wealthy mother. Age: 60+ TESS (CAMEO – DANCE CHOREOGRAPHER) – The Follies Dance Director and Bela Zangler’s love interest. Age: 25+ DEADROCK QUARTET – A downtrodden group of local miners. A vocal quartet who are confident in holding tight harmonies. Solid character actors, minimal choreography required. Age: 25+, Vocally disparate in range: Bass, Baritone, Tenor. EUGENE AND PATRICIA FODOR (CAMEO) – A couple of British tourists. Strong comic timing. Age: 25+ SUPPORTING ENSEMBLE Our Crazy ensemble is the heart of the production and will feature heavily throughout the entirety of the show, both vocally and as dancers/cameo characters. This production will be capitalising on the strengths of its cast and extending their performance opportunities in every way possible. This is the show that features performers who are excellent dancers, have character and stage presence and enjoy singing some of the most incredible Gershwin music as part of an ensemble. 12 ZANGLER FOLLIES GIRLS – We are looking for specialist dancers who are intermediate/advanced level in Jazz and Tap. Our design is a throwback to the extravagant and glamorous Follies productions at the turn of the 20th century – so we are looking for girls who smile with a sparkle in their eye! 10 MEN OF DEADROCK – We require a male dance troupe that is competent in Jazz, however experience in tap is a bonus! The males will perform multiple roles throughout the show from Follies boys to Western hicks, so we are looking for a range of ages, vocal types and appearances.
