Audrey Hepburn (Ixelles, Belgium, May 4, 1929 - Tolochenaz, Switzerland, January 20, 1993) was a British stage name Audrey Kathleen Ruston, an actress and humanitarian. Recognized as an icon of fashion and film, Hepburn was active during the Golden Age of Hollywood. It is considered by the American Film Institute as the third greatest female legend of American cinema. Born in Ixelles, a district of Brussels, Hepburn spent her childhood between Belgium, England and the Netherlands, including Arnhem which was occupied by the Germans during World War II. In Amsterdam, he studied ballet with Sonia Gaskell before moving to London in 1948 to continue his studies with Marie Rambert ballet and working as a chorus girl in the musical productions of West End. After appearing in several British films and starring in the 1951 Broadway play Gigi, Hepburn played the lead role in Roman Holiday (1953), which earned him an Oscar for best actress. Later acting in hit films such as Sabrina (1954), The Nuns Story (1959), Breakfast at Tiffanys (1961), Charade (1963), My Fair Lady (1964) and Wait Until Dark (1967), Hepburn received nominations Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA awards and accrued a Tony award for her theatrical performance in the 1954 Broadway play Ondine. Hepburn remains one of the few people to have won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. Hepburn was the first actress to win an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for a single performance: Roman Holiday in 1954. She appeared in fewer films as her life went on, devoting much of his later life to UNICEF. Despite having contributed to the organization since 1954, worked in some of the most profoundly disadvantaged communities of Africa, South America and Asia between 1988 and 1992. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work as Ambassador Unicef Goodwill in late 1992. a month later died of appendiceal cancer at her home in Switzerland in early 1993 at age 63.
