Aug 2 – [B] I have been reading the bible book of Genesis regarding the subject what is the biblical definition of marriage. What it contains is surprising and my knowledge from my childhood Sunday school lessons was incorrect. One scripture often cited by those who want a biblical definition of marriage is concerns that it is one man and one woman based on the creation story of the sixth day, where God took a rib from Adam and created Eve to be his helpmate. At face value, this is correct since there was but one man and one woman. Genesis specifically names three of Adam’s sons (Able, Cain, and Seth) but goes on to say that the couple had many other sons and daughters. Where did the three named sons get their wives? Given the story thus far, they married their sisters. This is not the only case where the bible mentioned that marriage of brother and sister is acceptable. We can all recall that, on two occasions, Abraham and Sarah posed as brother and sister since he was scared that the king of the country they were in would kill him in order to wed the beautiful Sarah. Not mentioned in Sunday school or in church sermons was the verse that stated Sarah was indeed Abraham’s sister. Abraham had two wives, Sarah and Hagar; upon the death of Sarah, he married again and had six more children with the third wife. Abraham’s grandfather had three sons. We know the story of Lot but are mostly unaware that Lot had a sister who married her uncle and produced a son who was the father of Rebecca, the girl who married Abraham’s son Isaac. This made the couple second cousins. Within this family tree is Laban, whose two daughters became the wives of Jacob. The marriages of all three patriarchs were polygamous. So the preponderance of the evidence in Genesis is that biblical marriage is not defined as the union of one man and one woman as some religious people state. Feel free to comment but before you do, go back and read Genesis to see what it actually says.
