Aug 26, 1986: Police Chief Charles Rodriguez, who announced his resignation after the city manager requested it, said he believes his two-week vacation cost him his job. I guess that brought it to a head being out of town, Rodriguez said Monday, hours after he quit his $72,172-a-year job at the behest of City Manager Fox. Rodriguez drew the wrath of Fox and other officials because he couldnt be reached while vacationing on the East Coast. I was asked to resign, said Rodriguez, who took office Nov. 14, 1983. The fact that I didnt call in precipitated the whole thing. The prior police chiefs have done the same thing (not contacted officials while on vacation). I cant see any deliberate improprieties. City officials told the San Antonio Light that Rodriguezs unavailability while on vacation was only part of a long list of managerial problems that had put him in disfavor at City Hall. During a five-minute meeting Monday morning in which Fox asked Rodriguez to quit, Fox said negative media coverage and the chiefs lack of rapport with the San Antonio Police Officers Association weighed in the decision. An official at the police union headquarters said association President Harold Flammia and Vice President Joe Martinez were unavailable for comment. Despite the fallout, Rodriguez said he hopes to stay in San Antonio, but added, Im not sure if Im going to stay in law enforcement. Ive already talked to several people (about jobs). He also defended his tenure with the department. Weve done quite a bit, said Rodriguez, who counted the addition of 200 patrolmen, the creation of the police Special Operations Unit and the reorganization of police brass as his foremost accomplishments. Rodriguez is the former commander of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. He holds a masters degree in public administration from the University of Southern California. Hoyack, a 26-year veteran of the citys police force, was named interim chief, Fox said.
