Aug. 4: Freedom. As Americans, it is often something we take for granted. And one of the liberties probably overlooked the most is the one addressing religion. We are dismayed at times with the chipping away of certain rights of worship. But unless we have served as missionaries in some foreign countries, most of us do not know what it is like to live knowing we will die if our Christianity is discovered by the government. August 3, 1944, such a thing took place. That day Annelies Marie Frank – Anne Frank – her family, and others who had been in hiding with them, were discovered by the Nazi Gestapo and persecuted. Little Anne and her family were German but had fled their country more than a decade earlier because they were something else as well. They were Jews; and that meant the threat of death under the Nazi regime. First they fled to the Netherlands to rebuild their lives. When the Germans closed in, they went into hiding. Their self-imposed captivity lasted two years until an informant tipped off the Nazis. They were captured and all died in various German concentration camps except Anne’s father Otto. After the war, he discovered the diary his daughter kept during their time underground had been saved. Most of you know the rest. You have heard of Anne Frank’s diary. Many of you may have read it. We live in a free country where our Founding Fathers gave us Constitutional Rights to freedom of religion. We should not take that lightly. “ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name. Bring an offering and come before Him; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.” (1 Chronicles 16:29)
