August 1, 2014 Discover Minnesota’s Lost Towns Contact: History and Cultural Association of East Otter Tail County Darla Ellingson hacaeotc@gmail 218-346-7678 Photo Captions: Book Cover, Author Rhonda Fochs, The town of Luce is one of Otter Tail Countys lost towns Catch author Rhonda Fochs, author of “Minnesota’s Lost Towns- Northern Edition” on the next stop of her book tour on Tuesday, August 12 at 6pm at the History Museum of East Otter Tail County in Perham “Telling the stories of people was the main purpose of my book,” said Fochs, who has spent 30 years capturing the most interesting and humorous stories. Her presentation will include a slide show depicting what’s left in the lost towns including examples of fully restored historical sites and “now and then” pictures. “Once-thriving towns have been completely or nearly completely abandoned,” Fochs said. “Often, the physical remains of the towns include a church, a school, a post office and saloons.” One such lost town is Craigsville, which had 49 saloons during its peak. One of the pictures in the book is an opening credit for the popular American TV show “Cheers,” which ran from 1982 to 1993. The book, featuring nearly 150 of Northern Minnesota’s lost towns, vanished villages and long ago places is a fascinating look at Minnesota’s history, people and places. Each community is covered in a narrative tale detailing the location, lifespan, decline and interesting aspects of the town. Historical and contemporary photos bring the words and the towns to life. Historians, genealogists, local residents, tourists, travelers, and anyone who enjoys a good tale will enjoy Foch’s presentation. Foch will also do a book signing. Books will be for sale through the History Museum of East Otter Tail County. Fochs “Minnesota Lost Towns- Northern Edition” presentation is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The presentation was made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Lake Region Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage fund. The History and Cultural Association of East Otter Tail County is 501c3 nonprofit comprised of the ITOW Veterans Museum, the History Museum and Historical Society of East Otter Tail County and the Pioneer Grounds, centered in Perham, MN. HACA has a regional focus of East Otter Tail County, but our programs serve visitors from around the state and around the globe with the goals of developing an understanding of the past, celebrating our cultural heritage, and exploring future possibilities that strengthen the bonds of community.
