August 12th 1955 - Hurricane Connie makes landfall near Fort Macon State Park in North Carolina. Connie moved ashore with winds of 80 mph, though later research suggest that the hurricane hit North Carolina with winds of at least 115 mph. The hurricane moved offshore and then come onshore again at Cape Charles along the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The hurricane came inland and dissipated on August 15th near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Connie claimed the lives of 74 people from the Leeward Islands up to Canada. The name of Connie was retired after the 1955 season. McCarthy Earls, Eamon.
